Improving your gedit with gmate – a great code editor!

Hallo zusammen! Hello everybody! Wow, it’s been more than a month since my last post here. Things have been really rough at University. I’ll try again to keep a post per week, I have a job now as a .NET developer, so probably there will be more posts about C# than Rails.

But nothing’s lost yet! I’m still having fun with RoR at home when it’s possible.
And I came here today for a quick post and great tip for you, Rails beginner developer.

Well, I’m now using Ubuntu 11.04, since its release. Personally, I’m finding it awesome. For sure there are still a few bugs, but, I hardly recommend it. And since I’m still using Ubuntu, gedit/gmate is my favorite one.

So, let’s quit the chitchat! And set things up.
I’m going to talk a bit about GMate, a set of plugins which work together with Gedit.
It’s really really easy to install. In fact, there are two simple ways to install.

1) Via apt-get, since I’m using Ubuntu, that’s how I did.

1 $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-on-rails/ppa 2 $ sudo apt-get update 3 $ sudo apt-get install gedit-gmate

Ok, you already have gmate installed, but without any plugin or theme already activated.

So, there’s a small trick to do that quickly.

Download the file here which is just a small bash to set up your gmate. And please, follow the code bellow.

1 $ chmod +x setup-gmate.sh 2 $ sh setup-gmate.sh

2) If you can’t don’t want to use apt-get, you can do everything via git.

Make sure you have git already installed. If you don’t, just copy and paste the code bellow.

1 $ sudo apt-get install git-core

Alright, let’s clone gmate from github.

In this case, you won’t need the bash to set up your gmate, there’s already one inside github repository.

1 $ git clone git://github.com/gmate/gmate.git 2 3 cd gmate 4 $ sh install.sh 5 $ Do you want to activate default 6 plugin and configuration set? [y,N]: y

Almost there. If you have any kind of trouble with sintax, you can edit one file and fix this problem. Go to /etc/mime.types and add next lines at the end of the file.

1 text/x-ruby-source rhtml html.erb erb 2 text/x-eruby rjs 3 text/x-yaml yml yaml

That’s it! Even it’s not everything, you can also find more pluing by typing:

1 $ sudo apt-get install gedit-plugins.

Now it’s up to you! Find the best theme to work with gmate.

Ok, now I’m done. Hope you guys enjoy this simple and great alternative for TextMate.

  1. Thanks for the tip – i’d love to give it a try. Unfortunately your link to setup-gmate.sh is not working.

Hope this can be fixed. Thanks!
